THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The No. 24 Cal Lutheran men's tennis team welcomed a formidable opponent in No. 13 University of Chicago to Poulson Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon, but after taking an early lead, the Kingsmen stumbled in singles play and fell 7-2.
Playing in their 11th straight home match and fourth straight non-conference match, CLU took an early 2-1 lead after doubles competition. Moises Cardenas and Jesse Knight won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Gio Valdez and Andrew Slater paired up for an 8-5 win at No. 3.
Unfortunately for the Kingsmen, that would be as many points as they would get after Chicago swept all six singles matches. Cardenas put up a fight at No. 1 by winning the first set, but eventually fell 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 to Nicolas Chua, and Valdez fought hard at No. 3, but ultimately dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision.
After seven matches in nine days, Cal Lutheran (7-10) will get a well deserved rest until their next match at Redlands on Apr. 10 at 2:00 p.m.
