THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - A busy week of play at the Poulson Tennis Center for the Cal Lutheran men's tennis team concluded today with a tough 6-3 loss to Tufts. The Kingsmen went 3-3 overall during the last six days.
The Jumbos swept through doubles, winning with ease at No. 3. On the second court, Fergus Scott and Oliver Thornton faced off with Nick Cary and Ben Battle where the duo was close at 4-3, but ultimately lost 8-5. The final series to finish came at the No. 1 match between Moises Cardenas and Jesse Knight and Nick Telkedzhiev and Brian Tan. The intensity heightened as the teams exchanged points and the Tufts pair stole the set 9-7 to give the visiting squad an early 3-0 advantage.
In singles, Cal Lutheran came back to win at courts one, two and three, all in tiebreakers, although the team match was already decided after Tufts took the meetings at No. 4, 5 and 6.
After falling in the opening sequences, Scott and Valdez chipped away, executing their respective game plans to take the second sets and shift the momentum. Scott came back from a 6-4 first set loss to win 6-0 before putting the match against Rob Jacobson in the books at 6-3 in the third at No. 2 for the first Cal Lutheran point of the day. On court No. 3 Valdez recovered from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Griffin Brockman 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Cardenas and Telkedzhiev rematched alone at No. 1 and Cardenas earned the only first set for the Kingsmen, though he fell in the second to force a tiebreaker as well. The CLU senior went on to win 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
Cal Lutheran (7-9) will wrap up the non-conference portion of its 2015 schedule on Wednesday, March 25 against the University of Chicago. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
