THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -Another non-conference match for the Cal Lutheran men's tennis team was a close one as the Kingsmen swept through doubles, but a trio of third set tiebreakers went in favor of visiting Mary Washington as the visiting team won the match 5-4 today at the Poulson Tennis Center.
The nearly four-hour affair started with exciting doubles sets. A 9-8 (6) finish from Moises Cardenas and Fergus Scott set the tone for doubles as the duo defeated Tyler Carey and Evan Charles. On both the No. 2 and No. 3 courts, CLU players teamed up for 8-5 victories with Ian Slater and Jesse Knight and Gio Valdez and Oliver Thornton playing together, respectively.
Once singles started, the tides turned and brother of Jesper Lunding-Johansson took down Scott 6-1, 6-2 for the first UMW point of the afternoon. The Eagles knotted things up with wins at No. 2 and No. 5.
Cardenas then battled to a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win at No. 1 singles to represent the final Cal Lutheran point of the match. In addition to Thornton's third set tiebreaker at No. 5, Valdez and Knight also played three full sets, though each fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
Cal Lutheran (4-4) fell to .500 on the season. The Kingsmen will be back on the courts on Sunday, March 8 for a 2:00 p.m. first serve against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
