CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran women's basketball team shot just 26 percent from the field and as a result fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 56-45 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action at the Rains Center on Saturday night.
With the win, the Athenas (22-3, 16-0 SCIAC) recorded an undefeated record in conference and became the only team to have beaten CLU twice this year.
Both teams shot below 30 percent in the first half, however the Regals were able to take a 25-23 lead into the break thanks to two free-throws from Sofia Cruz with one second remaining in the first stanza.
To start the second half, Jessica Salottolo drained a three-pointer for the first basket for either team to extend the Regals lead to 28-23.
In a tight game down 40-39 with 8:31 to play, the Regals went cold from the field and suffered a six-minute dry spell, which allowed the Athenas to take a commanding lead. During the stretch, CLU went 0-for-8 while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took advantage and went on a 12-0 run to take a 52-39 lead and secure the win.
Natalie Stone and Salottolo led the team with seven points apiece and for the first time this year no Regal scored in double-figures. Katy Lindor led the team with nine rebounds and Trianna Owen joined Salottolo as the only other Regal to drain a three-pointer.
For the Athenas, Kimberly Scamman led all players in the game with 25 points.
Cal Lutheran (17-7, 12-3 SCIAC) will wrap up the regular season this Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Occidental at 5:30 p.m.
