THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Facing the No. 9 ranked Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team in Division III on the road today, the Cal Lutheran Regals were shutout, 9-0, by Pomona-Pitzer in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match.
After nearly a two week hiatus from competition and facing one of the top teams in the country, the outcome was grim for the Violet and Gold.
PP opened an early 3-0 lead after doubles, which the Hens swept all three sets by 8-2 margins.
In singles action, the closest match came at No. 3 singles where Emily Werman went to a third set tiebreaker, falling 6-3, 7-6 (3) to Maryann Zhao.
Other singles action saw Rebecca Gold challenge Shivani Doraiswami, though she ultimately fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Shelby Kubota battled to a 6-1, 6-2 final at No. 5 and Mallory Kenny was on the short end of a 6-1, 6-1 loss at No. 1. Both Sarah Baker and Annette Sousa made late surges, but the duo fell 6-0, 6-3 on the No. 4 and No. 6 courts, respectively.
Cal Lutheran (2-1, 1-1 SCIAC) returns to action on Friday, Feb. 27 when the Regals host La Verne for a 2:00 p.m. first serve at the Poulson Tennis Center.
