THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The second round of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) men's soccer action got underway tonight as Cal Lutheran hosted Pomona-Pitzer. After an overtime affair in the first meeting of the year, it was déjà vu with the Sagehens coming out victorious again, 2-1 in double overtime, tonight at William Rolland Stadium.
The Cal Lutheran Kingsmen remained powerful tonight on the field. Sophomore, Aspen Smith led a strong defensive effort in the backfield, keeping the Sagehens at bay for the first half of tonight's competition. Sophomore Peter Wilder finished in the net with 12 saves against a fast-paced Sagehens offense.
Brandon Kearney and Nick Baldi played an aggressive role for the Kingsmen offense. It was Charlie Villa-Lovos who put CLU ahead with a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the first half with his first career goal. After a goal by the Sagehens, the teams headed to overtime, marking sixth OT game of the year for the Kingsmen. It was also the fourth double-overtime in 2015 and second consecutive 2OT.
Pomona Pitzer (5-5-2, 5-3-1) put up a valiant effort on the field, getting 28 shots off overall. With a halftime deficit of 1-0, forward, Max DeWit scored an equalizing goal in the middle of the second half. After, a strong push through the first period of overtime, and the score remaining 1-1, Bjorn Sigurdsson capitalized near the Kingsmen goal to end the game in the 114th minute, sending the Sagehens home with a 2-1 victory.
The teams combined for 52 shots. Leading all players was Elmer Molina with nine shots, including two on goal, while also providing the only assist for CLU. Bryan Hulse was next for the Kingsmen with five shots. Seven different players got shots, with six firing away two or more each. Ten of the 11 starting players worked a remarkable 114 minutes on the field.
Cal Lutheran (2-8-2, 2-6-1) heads out on the road for its next two games starting Wednesday, Oct. 7 when the Kingsmen travel to Occidental for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
