Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran football team hosted Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this evening at Rolland Stadium in its annual Black Out game and unfortunately fell 42-21 to the Stags on Saturday night.
Prior to kickoff the Kingsmen honored their 22 seniors, Connor Allen, Josh Bartley, Sean Bellotti, Bo Bergstrom, Michael Butler, Ronny Camacho, Ben Chavez II, Cale Dester, Kody Duffy-Huerta, EJ Edinburgh, Ushali Ellison, Josh Garrett, Josh Heidemann, Bryce Howard, Ricky Johnson, David Lederer, Jack McFarland, Alix Moise Jr., Kevin Olive, Nick Ruiz, CJ Washington and Trever Wood thanking them for their contributions and dedication to the program.
The first half saw a strong offensive performance from the Stags who took an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Kingsmen offense remained rather silent for most of the first half, yet a 29-yard catch by senior wide receiver Bellotti with under two minutes left of play in the second quarter shifted the momentum for the Violet and Gold as they were able to put together a late but quick scoring drive.
The Kingsmen four-play, 56-yard drive also saw a completion to senior tight end Moise,a rush by sophomore quarterback Adam Friederichsen and a 15-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Wood who Friederichsen found wide open in the end zone.
Cal Lutheran would carry that momentum shift into the second half as an exciting 95-yard kickoff return from senior running back Ellison would tie the game up 14-14.
Yet a costly personal foul would enable CMS to score again on its next possession, regaining the lead 21-14.
The Kingsmen, however, would waste no time responding, putting up a 10-play, 84-yard drive that began with a nine-yard pass to Bellotti. Friederichsen would later find Wood for 14 yards to bring up a third-and-two, and a clutch completion to Bellotti for 36 yards would bring the Kingsmen to the 26-yard line where Friederichsen would find Wood yet again for another 14-yard completion. CLU was able to convert on a third-and-12, tying the game up 21-21 on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Moise.
The back and forth action between the two offenses would come to an end as CMS would score on its following three possessions, pulling ahead with a comfortable three possession lead, ultimately putting the game away.
Offensive leaders for the Kingsmen included Wood with seven receptions for 110 yards and one touchdown and Bellotti with five receptions for 85 yards.
Friederichsen was 19-for-32 passing for 256 yards and two touchdowns while CMS quarterback Trey Reynolds threw for 284 yards and two scores.
Sophomore running back Andrew Segre was unstoppable for the Stags with an extraordinary 41 carries for 213 yards and three touchdowns on the night.
Cal Lutheran (4-3, 2-3 SCIAC) will be on the road next weekend as they travel to Eagle Rock to take on the Occidental Tigers at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 7. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
