CLU Settles for Draw with Poets

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran men's soccer team battled the Whittier Poets into double overtime for the second time this season and came away with a 1-1 tie at Graham Soccer Field on Monday night.

Offensive Highlights: After the Poets took a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute, Brandon Kearney responded with the equalizer in the 80th minute off a Charlie Villa-Lovos assist. CLU peppered Whittier with a barrage of shots in the final 10 minutes of regulation but could not break through. Zach Torres fired a shot off the post in the 88th minute and Elmer Molina missed a shot high in the 90th but the teams would settle for overtime. In similar fashion to their first meeting this season, the Kingsmen widely outshot Whittier, this time 32-18, led by nine shots apiece from Kearney and Pedro Zaccarelli.

Defensive Highlights: With the score knotted 1-1 in double overtime, Kingsmen goalkeeper Peter Wilder came through with three saves in a row in the final five minutes to secure the tie. Wilder finished with five saves in all 110 minutes of the match.

The Opponent: Jacob Conlon scored the lone goal for the Poets off an assist from Ricardo Pena inside the box. Conlon led Whittier with seven shot attempts while Ryan Wood added five.

Notables: With the tie, the Kingsmen halted a six game losing streak and also broke through for their first goal in three games. Kearney scored his 11th goal of the year and continues to lead the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) with 24 points.

Cal Lutheran (2-11-3, 2-9-2 SCIAC) returns to Rolland Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 24 for a matchup against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:00 p.m.
