THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - It was a straight sweep for the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team in the 2015 opener this afternoon as the Regals ran the table against Ventura College at the Poulson Tennis Center to start the spring season.

One of the goals for the 2015 CLU team is to start matches strong during doubles play and the Violet and Gold executed that perfectly today, opening a 3-0 lead early.

The No. 3 team of Sarah Baker and Rebecca Gold was unstoppable with a convincing 8-1 win over Candace MacNito and Cristina Ortiz. The No. 2 doubles duo of Annette Sousa and Emily Werman played together for the first time and doubled up Bailey Sindle and Jia Wiebe 8-4 before the No. 1 pair of Mallory Kenny and Shelby Kubota outlasted Yannick Garcia and Katy Schuck by a 9-8 (10-4) margin in their doubles debut together.

Once singles action began, there were a pair of 6-0, 6-0 sweeps from Sousa and Baker. Minutes after Sousa picked up the first individual win of her Cal Lutheran career, Baker, the lone senior on the squad, clinched her own set and the match for the team with the fifth overall point of the day at No. 4.

On courtNo. 5 Kubota posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory for the Regals and in the second spot for CLU, Gold went on to win 6-0, 6-2.

The final two individual matches were hard fought victories with Werman stealing the second game 7-5 after winning 6-1 while Kenny needed a third set tie-breaker in her singles debut for CLU. She took game one by a 6-2 margin prior to dropping a tough 7-6 set to force the third, which she came back to steal at 10-8 to complete the sweep.

Cal Lutheran (1-0) will be back on the courts Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10:00 a.m. when the Regals host Occidental in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener.
