REDLANDS, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran men's soccer team got off to a hot start on Wednesday night against Redlands but they could not hold on to the lead as the Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat CLU 3-2 at Farquhar Field.
Riding high from their upset win over conference leader Chapman, the Kingsmen set the tone early in the contest with a 10th minute goal from Nick Baldi off a Zack Larson free kick. For Baldi, it is his second goal of the season and the second game in a row that Larson has registered an assist.
Just two minutes later Larson kept up the pace and worked for his own shot, curving the ball towards the low post and into the back of the net. Larson has scored in back-to-back games and leads the team with three goals scored this season.
With a 2-0 lead early in the game, the Bulldogs kept up the attacking pressure and in the second half they were able to gain ground on CLU. In the 56th minute, Casey Chubbfertal fielded a cross into the box by Matej Kustura and fired it into the goal to bring Redlands within a goal of tying the game.
After the game tying goal in the 61st minute, a huge penalty on Cal Lutheran ultimately decided the outcome. In the 74th minute, a foul called inside the box awarded a penalty shot to Redlands, and they converted to take the 3-2 lead.
Redlands outshot the Kingsmen 25-7 and had an advantage in corner kicks 11-1. Goalie Jack Duncan recorded a season-high 10 saves for the Kingsmen fending off a barrage of shots including 13 of which were on goal from the Bulldogs.
Tyler Pascoe tied Larson for team-high honors with two shots, while Logan Cone, Jorge Galvan, and Baldi added one apiece.
Cal Lutheran (3-4-2, 2-3-1 SCIAC) will return home to the confines of William Rolland Stadium for their matchup against La Verne (4-4-1, 1-4 SCIAC) on Monday night at 7:00 p.m.
