CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran men's soccer team was handed their first conference loss of the season in heartbreaking fashion to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Pritzlaff Field on Saturday. The Stags found the back of the net just minutes into double overtime to capture the victory 2-1.

At the start of the game, CMS got the shooting under way with a cross into the box that was headed right into the hands of Kingsmen goalie Jack Duncan. Duncan prevented another attack minutes later on a Claremont-Mudd-Scripps free kick as he punched the ball away from a flurry of opponents in the box.

The first opportunity for Cal Lutheran came in the 12th minute. Zack Larson played the ball in the corner and lofted an accurate cross to the right side of the box. Tyler Pascoe played the ball on the volley and just missed the shot to the right.

In the 36th minute the Stags got on the scoreboard with a goal from William Cresap. Michael Wagenfield kicked the ball up and over the Kingsmen defenders and Cresap found himself one-on-one with Duncan and he fired it into the bottom left corner for the goal.

CMS held on to the lead until the Kingsmen answered back in the 64th minute. Just 47 seconds after checking into the game freshman Gabe Naudin found the back of the net for the equalizer. Naudin fielded the ball in the center of the box and kicked it to the upper right corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1.

In the 88th minute Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tried to end the game with shot but they were denied by Duncan once again and both squads would gear up for overtime. Duncan recorded a season-high seven saves in the game.

After a scoreless first overtime, CMS scored the game-winner just two minutes into double overtime. Sam Myers started the play feeding Taylor Lemon on the right sideline. Lemon raced down and crossed the ball on the ground to the center of the box where Ian Shelton found space and converted the golden goal.

CMS (1-0-1) fired 15 shots in the game with nine of them on goal compared to seven shots and three on goal for the Kingsmen. Pascoe was the only CLU player with more than one shot as he had two chances.

Cal Lutheran (2-2-1, 1-1 SCIAC) will continue Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play at home against Whittier on Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
