PASADENA, Calif. - Wednesday afternoon marked the first road contest of the year for the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team and it was a successful Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCAIC) opener for the Kingsmen who downed the Caltech Beavers 3-0.
On the back of junior midfielder Nathan Davidson the Violet and Gold tore past the host squad with a trio of first half goals. In his first start of the year, Davidson scored the game-winning goal in the second minute of action on an assist from Julian Hernandez.
Tyler Pascoe found the back of the net again in the 16th minute on a deflected free kick and later in the stanza Gabe Naudin notched his first career CLU goal in unassisted fashion to add to the cushion.
Overall, Cal Lutheran fired off 21 shots with six on target. Leading the attack today with four attempts was Nick Baldi, followed by Davidson with three. Hernandez and Zaiet each had a pair of shots as well. Additionally, the Kingsmen earned five corner kicks in the contest.
The ever-so-tough defensive unit of Hernandez, Logan Cone, Aspen Smith, in his first college start, and Tal Zaiet kept the opposition off the board for the second time of the fall and limited the Beavers to just four chances. Guarding the goal for more than 81 minutes was Jack Duncan who recorded a pair of saves before giving way to Sean Williams for the final 8:18 in his first appearance for CLU.
Caltech (0-4) looked to four different players for shots today and goalkeeper John David Feist recorded three saves.
Cal Lutheran (2-1-1) hits the road again on Saturday, Sept. 13 for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (0-0-1). The Stags played cross-street rival Pomona-Pitzer to a 1-1 double overtime draw to open league play.
