REDLANDS, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran women's tennis team continued through its toughest stretch of its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) schedule, falling 9-0 to No. 13 Redlands Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs, who fell in a close match to No. 15 La Verne Friday, won their 12th straight victory over CLU dating back to 2003.
Redlands took a 3-0 lead after sweeping all doubles matches. Ceara Sumida and Jessica Ly defeated Shelby Kubota and Daria Karakoulka 8-0 in the No. 1 pairing while Natalie Etchegaray and Julia Pollak topped Rebecca Gold and Dana Raugust 8-1 in the No. 2.
Cal Lutheran's best shot in doubles came in the No. 3 match with Lindsay Murphy and Sarah Baker taking on Lauren Villanueva and Gabriela Vasquez. The teams exchanged leads before the Redlands duo pulled away late for an 8-6 victory. The match marked the first doubles loss this season for Murphy and Baker.
The Bulldogs would continue to cruise in singles with Ly beating Murphy 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 match while Etchegaray won the No. 2 game after Karakoulka retired because of an injury.
Gold gave CLU its best chance at a point in singles when she took the first set 6-4 against Sumida in the No. 4 match-up. Unfortunately for CLU, Gold couldn't maintain the lead and eventually fell 6-2, 10-2.
Redlands rounded out the match with Villanueva defeating Kubota 6-4, 6-2 and Emily Murnin getting past Raugust 6-1, 6-0.
Cal Lutheran (3-9, 1-4 SCIAC) will play its final two home games of the season when it hosts Chapman on Friday, April 11 and Pomona-Pitzer on April 12. The match with the Panthers is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
