OJAI, Calif. - Day one of the 114th annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament was a successful one for Cal Lutheran as four of its six players won their singles matches and all three doubles teams were victorious Friday.

During the singles portion of the tournament, Connor Treacy defeated Teddy Burchett of Redlands in the round of 64 6-3, 6-0. Fergus Scott earned a berth into the round of 32 after he upset Graham Maassen of Pomona-Pitzer 7-6 (5), 6-2. Sean Handley and Ian Slater also competed in the round of 64 but fell to Spencer Simonides of Pomona-Pitzer and Glenn Hull of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, respectively.

After receiving a first round bye, Moises Cardenas advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Michael Chang of Pomona-Pitzer. Like Cardenas, Alex Nichols also had a bye in the round of 64 before defeating Shogo Shimizu of Whittier 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 32. Treacy picked up his second singles win of the day when he took down Elias Scandalis of UC Santa Cruz 6-2, 6-4 and earned a berth into Saturday's round of 16. CLU was denied its fourth player in the round of 16 when Justin Thompson of Chapman defeated Scott 6-2, 6-1.

As the match shifted to doubles, Jesse Knight and Slater got CLU started with an 8-5 victory over Charlie Werman and Thompson of Chapman. Following a first round bye, Cardenas and Scott advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals with a 8-3 win over Pomona-Pitzer's Sam Crawford and Jonathan Kim. Nichols and Treacy gave CLU a second team in the quarterfinals after downing Whittier's Troy Chavez and Sam Farmer 8-6. The Kingsmen nearly had a third team in the quarterfinals but Knight and Slater couldn't quite overcome Chris Wiechert and Anthony Bello of Pomona-Pitzer, falling 8-3.

Both the singles and doubles will continue Saturday. Action in Ojai will get underway at 12:00 p.m.
