THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran's No. 3 doubles pairing of Sarah Baker and Lindsay Murphy won their sixth straight match but it wasn't enough as Whittier topped the Regals 6-3 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action Saturday afternoon at the Poulson Tennis Center.
Baker and Murphy improved their season record to 6-0 on the year after topping Alexis Agustin and Benay Weintraub 8-4 but Daria Karakouka and Shelby Kubota fell in the No. 1 doubles pairing 8-2 and Rebecca Gold and Dana Raugust lost 8-5 in the No. 2 match up.
Trailing 2-1 after doubles, Baker got her fifth straight singles win when she defeated Liliana Serylo 6-1, 6-2 and then Raugust beat Agustin 7-6, 6-1 in the No. 6 game but that's all the Regals could get the rest of the way.
Murphy fell 6-0, 6-1 against Maegan Zamilpa in the No. 1 singles while Karakouka won the first set of the No. 2 pairing 6-3 but couldn't hang on against Adrienne Hamada, dropping the next two 6-2, 6-4.
Kubota dropped the No. 5 game to Weintraub 6-1, 6-0 and then the match concluded with the No. 3 pairing, pitting Gabi Etchegaray against Gold.
Etchegaray won the first set 6-3 before the two exchanged five different match point opportunities in the second. Gold had what looked like a cross court-winner but Etechgaray was able to chase it down send the ball back across the net and then later used a drop-shot to win the final point and the set 7-6 (12-10).
Cal Lutheran (3-7, 1-2 SCIAC) will resume conference action when it takes on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, April 4. The match will be held at Pouslon Tennis Center and is set to get underway at 2:00 p.m.
