GLENDALE, Calif. - For the first time in over two seasons, the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team didn't lose a point as it swept past Occidental 9-0 Friday afternoon. Not only did the win even CLU's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) record at 1-1 but it also marked the fourth straight victory over the Tigers.
Cal Lutheran was dominant from the start as it took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches 8-0. Playing in the second pairing, Rebecca Gold and Dana Raugust defeated Isabella Korfmann and Lucy Malloch while Sarah Baker and Lindsay Murphy took down Jess Hernandez and Hannah Munkacsi in the No. 3 match up. Daria Karakoulka and Shelby Kubota took a little longer in the No. 1 match up but eventually won 8-6 against Keilani Bonis-Ericksen and Amber Gadsen.
As the match shifted to singles, the Regals' dominance continued. Murphy topped Bonis-Ericksen 6-0, 6-1 while Karakoulka was victorious against Hernandez 6-0, 6-1 as well.
Gold battled Gadsen during the first set of the No. 3 pairing but eventually took it 7-6 and then cruised to a second set 6-3 victory.
Kubota walloped Mallach 6-2, 6-1 while Baker and Raugust won the No. 5 and 6 games both in a score of 6-0, 6-1.
Cal Lutheran (3-6, 1-1 SCIAC) will have a quick turnaround as it faces Whittier on Saturday, March 29, at 11:00 a.m.
