THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - In a showdown between top 30 ranked teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) No. 20 Cal Lutheran got three singles wins but the No. 28 University of Chicago took two of three doubles matches and held on in singles for a 5-4 victory over the Kingsmen Wednesday afternoon at the Poulson Tennis Center.
For the second match in a row, Moises Cardenas and Fergus Scott won their No. 2 doubles match, this time defeating Max Hawkins and Gordon Zhang 8-3. Unfortunately for CLU, Sven Kranz and Deepak Sabada beat Alex Nichols and Connor Treacy in the No. 1 match 8-3 and Zsolt Szabo and Krishna Ravella took down Sean Handley and Jesper Lunding-Johansson 8-3 as well.
The Kingsmen bounced back during the singles portion of the match as Cardenas improved to 6-2 on the season when he won 6-2, 7-5 against Kranz.
Treacy got CLU its third point of the day when he beat Ankur Bhargava 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 and moved his record to 3-5 on the year.
Playing in the No. 5 spot for the first time this season, Ian Slater made quick work of Szabo 6-4, 6-0.
That would be as close as the Kingsmen would get to the Maroon however as Sabada beat Nichols 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 match, Brian Sun topped Sean Handley 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 4 and Max Hawkins edged Jesse Knight 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 match up.
Cal Lutheran (2-6) resumes Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Saturday, March 29, when it takes travels to Whittier. The match between the Kingsmen and Poets is set to get underway at 10:00 a.m.
