SAN DIEGO, Calif. - One day after rain ruined the first day of a trip to San Diego the Cal Lutheran softball team returned to the diamond where the Regals continued their winning ways, sweeping past St. Katherine College by 7-1 and 12-3 margins to remain undefeated in 2014.
In the first game, Katelyn Downing (1-0) threw a complete game, scattering two hits and walking a pair while striking out one in her first outing of the spring. The offense got a spark from Kayla Sakamoto who was 2-for-4 with her first triple of the season. Ryanna Morua also had a solid game at the plate, going 2-for-3.
The second game saw Courtney Sooy (2-0) toe the rubber where she pitched a complete five-inning game as CLU forced the run-rule, while she aided her own cause with the first homerun of her career as the Violet and Gold outscored the Thunderbirds 11-3. She struck out four while surrendering a pair of hits with just one walk.
"I struggled in the at-bat before my homerun," Sooey went on, "But my team picked me up and I saw the knuckleball on the fourth pitch [after fouling off three straight] and I was so excited that I sprinted around the bases."
Sooy wasn't the only one hot at the plate today as Downing, Sakamoto, Andrea Brackpool and Liz Mertel also each notched two hits in the second game of the double dip.
Cal Lutheran (4-0) returns to the field on Saturday, Feb. 15 to open Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition against Pomona-Pitzer. First pitch of game one at Hutton Field is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
