LA MIRADA, Calif. - On the backs of four freshmen, the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team picked up its first victory of 2014 after it took down Biola 6-3 Friday afternoon.
First-year players Daria Karakoulka, Shelby Kubota, Rebecca Gold all won their singles matches and Dana Raugust helped in her doubles match as CLU defeated Biola for the second year in a row.
Despite a loss in the No. 1 doubles contest, Cal Lutheran responded with wins in the No. 2 and 3 matches. Emily Werman and Raugust defeated Susan Carmichael and Kelsey Post 8-6 in the No. 2 game and Karakoulka and Kubota combined for an 8-1 trouncing in the No. 3 match and gave the Regals a 2-1 lead.
Cal Lutheran would again fall in the No. 1 singles game but then reeled off four straight wins to clinch the match. Gold got things going with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Carmichael in the No. 2 match while Karakoulka won 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 3 match-up.
Werman won her No. 4 game with Lauren Vogel 6-1 and 6-2 before Kubota closed out the successful match for CLU with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Paige Erickson in the No. 5 singles pairing.
Katie Carroll and Lindsay Murphy also competed for the Regals on Friday.
Cal Lutheran will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Bates (Me.) on Feb. 18. The first match it set to get underway at 3:00 p.m. at the Poulson Tennis Center.
