SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The 2014-15 Cal Lutheran women's basketball season got underway this weekend with a pair of games in Santa Cruz, though the Regals fell to St. John Fisher (N.Y.) and UC Santa Cruz, 62-58 and 73-48, respectively.
On Sunday, Nov. 16, in the season opener, CLU dropped a close decision against the Cardinals in a game that saw 15 lead changes and eight ties. At the end of a see-saw battle the Regals tied things up 58-58 on a Janelle Porter layup, but when Portia Velasco scored on the ensuing possession, SJFC took the lead for good, icing the game with two more free throws from Sydney Bloomstein as time had nearly expired.
Chelsea Jacoby recorded her first double-double of the year with game-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds while adding a trio of both assists and steals. At the free-throw line Jacoby was perfect at 6-for-6 and she also connected for her only three-point attempt of the game. Taylor Messick shared the rebounding lead with 10 of her own, eight of which came at the offensive end of the court. Porter and Jessica Salottolo handed out four assists apiece.
Today, CLU returned to the court where the host Banana Slugs took a 7-2 lead and the Regals were never able to reverse the deficit. Leading all players with 21 points was Sarah Mackey for UCSC.
The Regals put two players in double figures with Jacoby again leading the way offensively after pouring in 13 points. Salottolo recorded a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. Porter and Trianna Owen each came off the bench for seven points in the loss. Katy Lindor was second to Salottolo with eight boards. Defensively, CLU combined for five blocks in the game with Jacoby notching two.
Cal Lutheran (0-2) will host Augsburg (Minn.) on Tuesday, Nov. 25 for the Regals' home opener. Tip-off inside of the Gilbert Arena is set for 6:00 p.m.
