CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran men's soccer team fell short today against league-leading Pomona-Pitzer in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCAIC) road game as the Kingsmen were edged, 3-1.
Just over 20 minutes into the first half Matthew Marvin got the Sagehens on the board off an assist from Jake Merkle. Less than five minutes later the home team added a second score, which was the ultimate game-winner. Felipe Galvis created a one-on-one situation for teammate Nathan Shekita against Cal Lutheran goalie Jack Duncan and the forward prevailed, giving PP a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute.
After the intermission the Hens would add an insurance goal when Peter Rentzepis converted a rebound from a penalty kick, taken by Shekita, into a goal to push the advantage to 3-0.
At the 55:51 mark the only Cal Lutheran offensive spark of the game came when Bryan Hulse connected with Zack Larson who volleyed a long ball over the head of Pomona-Pitzer goalie Nigel Brady for the lone Violet and Gold scoring play of the day.
In a 4:00 p.m. kickoff, the Sagehens had the upper hand offensively, outshooting CLU 24-14 with eight corner kicks to three for the Kingsmen. Larson led the attack with four shots while Elmer Molina finished with three. Both Henry Breheny and Gabriel Fernando had one shot that was on goal.
Despite the loss, defensively, Duncancame up with nine saves to keep the game close.
Pomona-Pitzer (9-2-1, 7-1-1 SCIAC) remained atop the league standings with the win. Marvin fired off a game-high six shots.
Cal Lutheran (3-7-2, 2-6-1) will travel to Whittier on Saturday, Oct. 11 to face the Poets at 7:00 p.m.
