WHITTIER, Calif. - There were plenty of shots to go around on Saturday night for both Cal Lutheran and Whittier, but both teams were able to score just once for a 1-1 draw after double overtime.
The Kingsmen and Poets combined for 45 shots on a night that also saw 48 combined fouls and six yellow cards. CLU and Whittier battled to a similarly hard fought 1-1 draw earlier in the season at Rolland Stadium.
Zack Larson did not waste any time getting off the first shot of the game in the third minute but the shot was saved by the Whittier goalie.
CLU went on to outshoot the Poets 11-4 in the first half alone, but neither team could find the back of the net.
The second half was a different story as Nick Baldi scored off an assist from Tyler Pascoe to give the Kingsmen a 1-0 lead. For Baldi, the goal is his third of the season to place him second on the team.
With the high octane shooting performance in full effect, the Poets were able to even the score off a free kick in the 85th minute. Tyler Crough headed the ball in off the cross that came from outside the box for Whittier.
The Violet and Gold outshot the Poets 6-5 in the remaining two overtime periods but the final horn sounded with the score knotted up 1-1.
Larson led both teams with nine shots on the day, four of which were on goal, and Cal Lutheran out shot Whittier 25-20 in the game including 10-5 in shots on goal. Whittier held the edge in corner kicks 6-5 and both teams picked up three yellow cards in the match. Logan Cone had four shots in the game and Baldi added three. Tal Zaiet, Alex Wardle, and Pascoe had two shots apiece.
Cal Lutheran (3-7-2, 2-6-2 SCIAC) will come home to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:00 p.m. on Monday at Rolland Stadium.
