THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Daria Karakoulka and Sarah Baker won their season debut singles matches but it wasn't enough as NAIA member Westmont won 7-2 Friday afternoon in Cal Lutheran's 2014 opener. The Regals took two other matches to third set tie-breakers and were two points away in a doubles match but couldn't quite deliver the winning points.
Karakoulka, who was making her CLU debut, won the Regals' first point of the day when she defeated Grace Davis is straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles match.
Baker followed that up in the No. 6 singles match by blanking Emily Keach in the first set 6-0 and then took the match after winning 6-4 in the second set.
Rebecca Gold, competing for the first time as a member of CLU, won the second in the No. 2 singles match against Haley Strandness but it wasn't she couldn't come up with the winner in the tie-breaker, falling 7-6 (11-9).
Shelby Kubota had a similar debut to Gold, also taking the second set before falling in the tie-breaker. Kubota played Alyson Meyers in the No. 5 singles match falling in the first set 6-3, winning the second 7-5 and narrowly missing out on a third set win she lost the tie-breaker 7-6 (10-6).
Westmont edged CLU in doubles play with Lauren and Kate Stratman defeating the Regals' No. 1 double duo of Gold and Lindsay Murphy 8-1.
Dana Raugust and Emily Werman were closer in the No. 2 doubles match falling 8-3 and the combination of Karakoulka and Kubota in the No. 3 match nearly gave CLU its first doubles win of the year before it was out-dueled by Meyers and Strandness 8-6.
Cal Lutheran will look to get back in the win column on Feb. 7 when it travels to Biola. The match is set to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
