THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - For the fifth time this season the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team shut out their opponent, defeating Redlands 1-0 in Rolland Stadium in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play, handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.
Kyle Fleming was responsible for the single goal, which was his fourth of the season. The Kingsmen took a total of eight shots in tonight's game, three of which were on goal. Salvador Orozco and Nathan Davidson each had a shot on goal to go with Fleming's.
Cal Lutheran's defense played extremely well tonight, communicating and working as a team to defeat Redlands. The Bulldogs had a total of eight corner kicks, compared to two for the Kingsmen, and not one made it in the net. Within the last 15 minutes of the game UR had three corner kicks in a row. The first corner kick could have been a game changer, but Jorge Galvan blocked the ball and saved CLU's winning streak.
The teams were evenly matched, fighting for possession of the ball throughout the game. Clearly a physical game, a total of 24 fouls were called, seven against Redlands and 17 on Cal Lutheran.
Kingsmen goalie Jack Duncan started his fourth game of the season and continues to play strong for the Violet and Gold. Duncan saved all three of the Bulldogs shots on goal. Galvan, Matthew Scipione, Alex Wardle and Tal Zaiet teamed up for another solid defensive effort. Midfielder Ivan Sanchez also came up with a huge block in front of the Cal Lutheran cage just before halftime to preserve the CLU lead.
Redlands (2-1, 2-1 SCIAC) was led tonight by Richie Marquez and Charles Izydorek who combined to fire the three UR shots. Andreas Silva played the entire game as the keeper for the Maroon and Gray, turning away two CLU shots.
Cal Lutheran (5-1-1, 3-0-1 SCIAC) returns to the field on Monday, Sept. 23 when the Kingsmen take on La Verne at Rolland Stadium with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
