THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- As the clock struck 8:00 p.m. Lauren Toohey ripped a backhand down the line, forcing the decisive point and gave the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team a 5-4 victory over Caltech in a match that lasted exactly six hours.
After Caltech captured the No. 1 doubles match, Jacqueline Ramsay and Toohey got the first points of the day for CLU as they outlasted Michelle Lee and Valerie Pietrasz 9-7 in the No. 2 doubles contest.
The Regals then took the lead after the No. 3 pairing of Carly Mouzes and Lindsay Murphy made quick work of Jessica Yeung and Stephane Kwan, defeating the pair 8-1.
Unfortunately, Cal Lutheran fell behind as CLU fell in both the No. 1 and 2 singles matches. Sarah Baker got the Regals even at 3-3 when she defeated Kwan 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in No. 3 singles but Jessica Yeung outdueled Ramsay in the No. 4 match, winning 6-3, 6-0.
Trailing 4-3 with two matches left, Mouzes and Toohey both battled for over two and half hours in their respective games. Mouzes kept the Regals winning-chances alive after she bounced back from a 18-16 tiebreaking loss in the first set by working her way through the next two, wining 6-2, 6-3 over Lee.
Toohey and Zeke Millikan were the final pairing to conclude as both put on tremendous defensive efforts. Toohey took the first set 7-5 but fell in the second, 6-2. With the game and the match on the line, the two exchanged points until Toohey finally broke through with a backhand down the line for the winning point, taking the tiebreaker 8-6.
Cal Lutheran (4-3, 1-2 SCIAC) has a quick turnaround as it travels to Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow, March 2, with the matches set to get underway at 11:00 a.m.
