THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Trailing for over 80 minutes, Cal Lutheran scored three goals in the final 18 minutes to defeat Redlands 3-2 in double overtime on Saturday. Taylor Will scored two goals including the game-winner just 15 seconds into the second overtime. It marked the second straight game the Regals have rallied to win in overtime.
Redlands struck first in the 21st minute following a free-kick that took a bounce over a CLU defender and Megan Marks headed in a shot past Kristin Bailey.
Cal Lutheran got unlikely in 33rd minute when Savannah Laursen took a free-kick for 25 yards out that partially deflected off a CLU defender and flew into the goal for the second score of the game.
The Regals forwards made a number of runs but couldn't quite connect as the Bulldogs held CLU to two shots and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
CLU came out a different squad in the second half firing off five shots in the first 20 minutes.
Will finally broke through in the 65th minute when Bailey Marquez played in a stellar-through ball that she then dribbled around the goalkeeper and sent a left-footed shot in the for the goal.
Not a minute later, Will again made a run down the left flank and pushed a cross through the middle that Bianca Deardorff got a foot on but the Redlands goalkeeper Felix made an outstanding sliding save.
Felix threw it out and started a counter-attack that ended with a Redlands forward going on a one-on-one with Bailey but the shot sailed high.
After trailing for the entire match, Cal Lutheran got the equalizing goal when Brittany Eremita blasted in a deflection off a free-kick in the 83rd minute.
Will nearly had her second goal of the game in the 88th minute when Nicole Campbell slipped in a pass to her but she was called off-sides.
Cal Lutheran had a corner-kick in the last second but couldn't convert so the teams headed into overtime tied at 2-2.
A minute into the extra period, a pass sailed over a Cal Lutheran defender to an unmarked Lihini Weerasinghe, who then fired a shot on goal but it went wide.
CLU had a similar chance two minutes later when Deardorff flicked in a shot into traffic and the ball ricocheted off a Redlands player but Felix was able to make the save from her knees.
Just 15 seconds in the second overtime, Campbell dribbled down the left flank, stopped and spun and fired a perfect cross over to Will who then put in the net for the golden goal.
Deardorff and Will led CLU with four shots each while Eremita had three and Kristina Hulse had two.
Laursen had two shots including the goal to lead Redlands.
With the loss, Redlands falls to 3-6-2 and 2-4-2 in the SCIAC.
Cal Lutheran (10-3, 7-1 SCIAC) has a quick turnaround as it plays UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, Oct. 13. Kickoff inside of Rolland Stadium is set for 3:00pm.
