CLAREMONT, Calif., - The Cal Lutheran Women's Soccer team got two goals in the last minutes of the first half to propel them past Pomona-Pitzer 2-0 Wednesday afternoon in Claremont. With the win, the Regals improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the SCIAC. The Sagehens fall to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the SCIAC.
Head Coach Frank Marino was pleased with the team's performance on the road, "We're getting better every game. I thought today we possessed the ball and maintained our shape better than we have been."
Cal Lutheran got their first goal off a corner kick in the 35th minute when Nicole Rains possessed the ball, took one touch and shot. The ball deflected off two Pomona-Pitzer defenders and into the back of the net.
The second goal came just before half time when a punt by goalie Kristin Bailey ended in a 50-50 ball that Bailey Marquez was able to win and flick a header ahead to Carmen Wheeler. Wheeler got the ball in stride and was able to dribble past a Sagehen defender and score on the breakaway.
The Regals were able to stall any Pomona-Pitzer offense in the second half and narrowly missed several goal-scoring opportunities themselves.
"This team is still figuring out to how finish out games but that will come with time," said Marino. "I'm pleased with our progress and I'm always happy to see Bailey and the rest of the defense put another zero up on the score board."
Coming into the game, Pomona-Pitzer had upset No. 25 Chapman this past Saturday.
"Pomona-Pitzer always plays hard and smart but we were just able to maintain more of the possession and convert on a couple chances. I'm proud of our team's performance today," Marino said.
Cal Lutheran has a busy weekend, first traveling to Occidental Friday night at 7:00 p.m., before hosting UC Santa Cruz Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Rolland Stadium.
