Regals to Battle Bulldogs for Third Place at SCIAC Championships

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran women's tennis won its opening match at the SCIAC Championships on Friday 5-0 over La Verne. The Regals fell 8-1 in the semifinals against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and will play Redlands in the third place match on Saturday morning.

Cal Lutheran 5, La Verne 0 - F
Cal Lutheran took a commanding 3-0 lead over La Verne following a doubles sweep to open its conference tournament schedule. Holly Beaman and Jordan Leckness earned the final two points at second and fifth singles respectively to earn the match clinching points.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 8, Cal Lutheran 1 - F
Top seeded CMS swept doubles and parlayed that momentum into singles play. The Athenas were unable to blank the Regals after CLU's Lauren Toohey won a third set super tiebreak at sixth singles 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (10-4) over Sheena Patel.

No. 4 seed Cal Lutheran will face No. 3 Redlands in the third place game on Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m. The Bulldogs defeated the Regals 8-1 in their regular season meeting on April 11.

No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will face No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer in the championship match.
