THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's soccer returned to the win column Wednesday night, shutting out Chapman 3-0 at William Rolland Stadium in a complete team effort.
The Regals wasted little time putting pressure on the Chapman defense, firing 21 shots throughout the match, including 12 on target. After a scoreless opening 40 minutes, Cal Lutheran finally broke through in the 42nd minute when
Atiana Santoyo finished off a feed from
Emily Broel to give the Regals a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Cal Lutheran doubled its advantage just four minutes into the second half when
Makenna Tanaka found the back of the net for the first goal of her collegiate career, pushing the Regals ahead 2-0.
The Regals continued to keep Chapman goalkeeper Sienna Gomez busy, eventually forcing nine saves between Gomez and second-half goalkeeper Bella Barretto.
Cal Lutheran added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute when
Isabella Haulman converted from the penalty spot to make it 3-0.
From there, the Regals' defense locked things down.
Kira Kasarda made five saves to preserve the shutout, while Cal Lutheran held Chapman to just eight total shots and two in the second half.
The Regals used 28 players in the victory, giving a number of players valuable minutes as Cal Lutheran navigated a physical, fast-paced match.
The win moves Cal Lutheran to 4-1-3 overall and 1-0-2 in SCIAC play.
The Regals hit the road Saturday, September 26, traveling to La Verne for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
