CLAREMONT, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's soccer battled back from an early deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday night at Nakasone Field.
The Regals (3-1-3, 0-0-2 SCIAC) controlled much of the early action, putting up five shots in the opening 18 minutes while forcing CMS goalkeeper Andra Marinescu to make three saves. The Athenas opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Carmel Randolph finished a pass from Robyn Dizon to give CMS a 1-0 lead.
Cal Lutheran continued to pressure the Athenas throughout the remainder of the half, but CMS carried the one-goal advantage into halftime.
The Regals came out firing in the second half, matching CMS with 11 shots while continuing to create chances at both ends of the field.
Kira Kasarda made two saves in the opening 15 minutes of the half to keep Cal Lutheran within striking distance.
That pressure finally paid off in the 63rd minute, as
Sawyer Frye sent a corner kick into the box and
Tessa French redirected the ball into the goalmouth for her second goal of the season, leveling the match at 1-1.
The two teams traded chances from there, with each recording 11 shots in the second half. CMS hit the crossbar twice in the final 30 minutes, while Cal Lutheran continued to threaten with shots from
Jessica Sprouse and company
Neither side could find the decisive goal, sending the match to a 1-1 final.
Sprouse led the Regals with six shots, including three on frame, while
Riley Cardenas added two shots on goal. Kasarda made two saves in goal.
Cal Lutheran returns home Wednesday, September 23, hosting Chapman at 7 p.m.
