Regals Rally to Sweep Athenas, Clinch Series

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran softball flipped the script in a big way on Saturday, sweeping Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a doubleheader at Hutton Field to secure a massive SCIAC series victory.

The Regals (12-16, 4-8 SCIAC) took game one behind a dominant all-around performance from Olivia Oregel, before storming back in dramatic fashion in the finale for a walk-off win, capped by a two-out rally.

GAME ONE: CAL LUTHERAN 4, CLAREMONT-M-S 1
The opener belonged to Oregel, who controlled the game both in the circle and at the plate. The sophomore earned her fifth win of the season, tossing 5.2 strong innings while allowing just one run, and also led the offense with a 2-for-2 performance that included a double and an RBI.

CLU broke through in the third inning, capitalizing on timely hitting and an Athena miscue to plate two runs. The Regals added two more in the fourth, highlighted by an RBI single from Oregel and heads-up baserunning that extended the lead to 4-0.

Kylen Mingus entered in relief and shut the door, helping secure the 4-1 victory and set the tone for the rest of the day.

GAME TWO: CAL LUTHERAN 6, CLAREMONT-M-S 5
If game one was controlled, game two was chaos in the best possible way.

Trailing 5-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Regals chipped away before delivering a sixth and seventh inning that defined the series.

Mia Reveles sparked the comeback with an RBI knock in the fifth, and in the sixth, Jessica Waters launched a two-run home run to center field to suddenly pull Cal Lu within two.

Then in the seventh with two outs and the game on the line, the Regals refused to fold. Reveles laced a clutch double to get things started, followed by a phenomenal at bat from Reyna Perez that resulted in a walk. After an error loaded the bases, Waters was hit by a pitch to bring home a run and cut the deficit to one.

Moments later, Sofia Aviles delivered the exclamation point, ripping a single up the middle to score two and complete the walk-off comeback, sealing a 6-5 win and an unforgettable series triumph.

Mingus was once again crucial in the circle, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn her first collegiate victory and cap off a standout day across both games.

The sweep marks one of CLU's biggest series wins of the season, showcasing resilience, timely hitting, and a team-wide belief that never wavered.
