THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – It was, indeed, a bad day to be a Banana Slug.
No. 6 Cal Lutheran men's volleyball delivered one of its most complete performances of the season on Saturday afternoon, sweeping No. 11 UC Santa Cruz in straight sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-21) inside a packed Gilbert Arena during the team's "Purple Out" home finale.
From the opening serve, the Kingsmen (20-6) were in control. The first set featured early back-and-forth play, with both teams settling in amid a flurry of Santa Cruz service errors. Then, locked at 9-9, Cal Lu began to create separation with steady offensive production and timely Slug miscues. Clinging to a narrow 20-19 lead late, the Kingsmen capitalized on back-to-back errors before getting key kills from
Connor Crawford,
Tyler Linville, and
Brendan Hom to secure a 25-22 win.
That momentum carried into the second set. After briefly trailing 6-5, CLU flipped the set for good behind a Hom kill, a combo block from Linville and
Matthew Wilcox, and another Santa Cruz error. A dominant 7-2 mid-set run widened the gap, fueled by a series of Kingsmen blocks—three involving
Mason Rowell—as Cal Lu's presence at the net began to overwhelm the Slugs. Santa Cruz made a late push, but a Rowell solo block, a Hom kill, and a crafty second-touch finish from setter
Gavin Galanski sealed a 25-20 victory and a 2-0 match lead.
The third set removed all doubt, if any even remained. The Purple & Gold raced out to an early advantage and never trailed, showcasing some of its sharpest and scrappiest volleyball of the season. Though the Slugs mounted a late 7-3 run to close within 22-21, the Kingsmen responded immediately. Linville delivered a clutch kill before teaming up with Rowell for a match-clinching block, sending the Gilbert crowd into celebration.
Cal Lutheran dominated at the net, outblocking Santa Cruz 11-3 while holding the Slugs to a .178 hitting percentage. The Kingsmen also turned in one of their most efficient offensive home performances of the season, hitting .358 as a team.
Individually, it was a legacy match for Linville and
Braden Gonzales. Linville led all players with 14 kills on a blistering .545 hitting percentage while adding four blocks, consistently terminating points and setting the tone on the outside. Gonzales anchored the back row with a match-high 11 digs, repeatedly extending rallies and providing the defensive backbone for Cal Lu's transition offense.
Hom was equally dominant, finishing with 13 kills on .500 hitting as he and Linville overwhelmed Santa Cruz on the pins. At the net, Wilcox and Rowell spearheaded a relentless blocking effort that disrupted the Slugs all afternoon, while Galanski orchestrated the offense with 33 assists in a steady performance.
Now, it all comes down to one more. Cal Lutheran will travel to UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, April 11 for the second leg of the home-and-home series in what amounts to a "win-and-in" scenario for the NCAA Tournament. If Saturday's performance was any indication, the Kingsmen will head north with plenty of confidence.
