Kingsmen Storm Back for Reverse Sweep, Clinch Third-Straight Regional Title

HOBOKEN, N.J. – In one of the most unforgettable matches in program history, No. 5 Cal Lutheran men's volleyball delivered a gutsy, season-defining performance on Saturday night, rallying from two sets down to defeat No. 15 MIT in a 3-2 thriller (20-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-22, 15-12) and punch its ticket to the NCAA Final Four.

The victory marked Cal Lutheran's first reverse sweep of the season, and it could not have come at a bigger moment. With their backs against the wall, the Kingsmen (23-6) showed unwavering composure and belief, flipping the match on its head behind relentless energy and execution down the stretch.

With the win, Cal Lu secures its third consecutive NCAA Regional Championship, continuing a historic run for the program.

MIT (24-8) controlled the early stages of the match, coming out aggressive in the opening set and never allowing the Kingsmen to establish rhythm. The Engineers maintained a narrow but steady edge, holding off multiple Cal Lu pushes to take the first set, 25-20.

The second set followed a similar script, though the Kingsmen showed signs of life. Cal Lu jumped out to an early advantage behind a kill from Gavin Galanski and a solo block from Mason Rowell. Later trailing 12-10, the Kingsmen surged ahead with an 8-2 run fueled by kills from Connor Crawford and Brendan Hom, along with a dominant stretch at the net from Matthew Wilcox, but MIT responded once again. The Engineers erased the deficit and edged out a tightly contested finish, claiming the set 27-25 to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.

Facing elimination, the Kingsmen refused to let their season end. Cal Lu came out with renewed intensity in the third, jumping ahead 6-3 behind kills from Tyler Linville, Crawford, and Rowell, along with an ace from Wilcox. The Kingsmen maintained control throughout, closing the set on a 7-2 run capped by a Linville kill to secure a 25-20 win while hitting a match-best .419.

Momentum carried into the fourth set, where Cal Lutheran built an early lead, capitalizing on MIT errors and timely offense from Linville. With the Kingsmen leading 10-8 and firmly in control, the match took an unexpected turn.

A faulty fire alarm forced a stoppage in play, sending both teams out of the arena for approximately 25 minutes. Despite the disruption, Cal Lutheran returned focused and unfazed. MIT briefly tied the set at 13-13, but the Kingsmen regained control behind key points from Crawford and a series of MIT miscues.

After fighting off multiple set points, the Engineers ultimately conceded the frame on a service error, sending the match to a decisive fifth set.

In the final set, Cal Lu struck first and never lost its edge. A balanced attack and continued pressure forced MIT into critical errors, while Crawford and Wilcox delivered in key moments. With the score tied at 12-12, the Kingsmen closed on a 3-0 run highlighted by back-to-back kills from Crawford to seal the comeback victory.

Crawford led the charge with a career-high 23 kills, adding eight digs and four block assists in a dominant all-around performance. Linville finished with 15 kills on an efficient .433 hitting percentage, while Hom contributed 13 kills and two aces.

Wilcox anchored the net with eight blocks, and Rowell added four as Cal Lutheran outblocked MIT 12-9.

Galanski orchestrated the offense with 48 assists and 11 digs, recording his second consecutive double-double while guiding the Kingsmen to a .268 team hitting percentage.

Defensively, Braden Gonzales delivered a standout performance with 15 digs, anchoring the back row in critical moments. The Libero also etched his name in the record books, surpassing his own single-season program record and reaching 301 digs on the year. He now sits just seven digs shy of the program's all-time career mark.

As a team, Cal Lu held a slight 62-60 edge in kills in a tightly contested match that featured numerous ties and momentum swings.

Following the match, Crawford was named the Regional's Most Valuable Player after totaling 42 kills, 15 digs, and six block assists across the two games. Linville and Galanski also earned All-Regional Team honors, with Galanski finishing the weekend with 106 assists and 23 digs.

Cal Lutheran now advances to the NCAA Final Four, where it will face No. 1 seed and host Springfield College in a rematch of last year's national semifinal. First serve is set for Thursday, April 23 at 2 p.m. PT, with a trip to the national championship on the line.
