WHITTER, Calif. — Cal Lutheran baseball (22-12, 9-6 SCIAC) dropped both installments of a doubleheader to Whittier, dropping the series following a Friday win on the shoulders of a
Max McGrady complete game.
GAME ONE: WHITTIER 9, CAL LUTHERAN 4
The doubleheader's morning game was all Kingsmen early, as a walk, hit-by-pitch, and sacrifice bunt to start the game brought cleanup hitter
Lucas Danielewicz to the plate, who smacked a single and put Cal Lutheran on top.
A fielder's choice and an error brought
Jona Dawson into the batter's box, who put the ball in play and forced a Whittier error, putting the Kingsmen up 3-0 after one.
First-year catcher
Owen Capron added to the Cal Lu lead in the top of the second, smashing his first collegiate home run in just his fourth start.
That was all she wrote for the Kingsmen offense however, as following a Poet run in the fifth to tie it, Whittier put up a five-spot seventh to push the game out of reach and take the win.
GAME TWO: WHITTIER 3, CAL LUTHERAN 2
After a clean first inning to kick off the afternoon game,
Ethan Dungo got the scoring started with his second RBI of the season, a sac fly to score Blickenderfer.
Although Whittier tied the contest in the bottom of the second, the Kingsmen jumped right back in front thanks to a line drive homerun to left field off the bat of
Troy Anderson, his second of the year.
It was a tough defensive sequence for Cal Lu in the bottom half of the fourth however, as a pair of errors led to a pair of Whittier runs, giving the Poets the lead, which they would hang onto for the remainder of the game.
Despite the loss, three Kingsmen, Danielewicz, Blickenderfer and Anderson all tallied two hit days, while
Colten Hanson and
Aidan Buntich combined to allow only one earned run.
