SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Facing another tough Division I test, the No. 6 Cal Lutheran men's volleyball team showed resilience, but ultimately fell 3-1 to UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday night inside the Thunderdome.
The Kingsmen (18-6) once again proved they could compete with the nationally ranked Gauchos, claiming a set against them on the road for the first time in program history.
Cal Lu came out sharp in the opening set, racing to a 6-3 lead behind a string of UCSB errors. The Gauchos quickly evened the score, and from there the set remained tightly contested. The Kingsmen maintained a slight edge deep into the frame, holding a 21-19 advantage before UCSB surged late. A decisive 6-2 run by the Gauchos flipped the set and handed CLU a narrow 25-23 loss.
The second set followed a similar early script, with a
Tyler Linville kill putting the Kingsmen on the board first. The teams traded points until UCSB created separation midway through, using an 11-3 run to take control. Cal Lutheran found a few answers late, including kills from
Mason Rowell and
Connor Crawford, but couldn't recover as the Gauchos took a 2-0 match lead.
Refusing to back down, the Kingsmen responded in the third. After falling behind 6-3, Cal Lu rattled off four straight points—three coming from UCSB errors—to swing momentum. The set remained competitive before a dominant mid-set push gave the Kingsmen a 16-12 lead. That stretch featured a Crawford kill and solo block, another solo rejection from
Matthew Wilcox, and a Linville service ace.
Cal Lutheran continued to apply pressure, with
Brendan Hom delivering back-to-back kills and Crawford adding another to extend the lead. The Kingsmen closed strong on a 5-2 run, highlighted by consecutive blocks from Wilcox, Crawford, and Linville to secure a 25-21 set win and force a fourth.
In the final frame, UCSB jumped out to a 10-6 advantage, but CLU battled back to tie it at 10-10 behind a pair of Linville kills and a block from Wilcox and
Gavin Galanski. The Gauchos gradually regained control, however, and used a late 7-2 run to close out the match.
UCSB's presence at the net proved to be the difference. The Gauchos totaled 17 blocks and held Cal Lu to a .087 hitting percentage, with the majority of the Kingsmen's attack errors coming via the block. UCSB hit .278 as a team, led by George Bruening's match-high 21 kills.
CLU saw balanced offensive production, with Crawford, Hom, and Linville each recording nine kills. Wilcox led the defensive effort at the net with four blocks, while Galanski dished out 27 assists.
Braden Gonzales anchored the back row with a match-high 12 digs.
The Kingsmen will return home on Saturday, March 28 for an exhibition against Moorpark College at 6 p.m., which will also serve as Senior Night honoring Crawford, Gonzales, and
Aidan Godfrey. Cal Lutheran's next official contest is set for April 4 at 2 p.m. against No. 11 UC Santa Cruz.
