PASADENA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's basketball returned to the win column on Saturday afternoon, pulling away in the second half for a 96-79 road victory over Caltech inside Braun Gymnasium.
The Kingsmen weathered an early challenge from the Beavers before flipping the script after halftime, using efficient shooting and bench production to turn a tight contest into a win.
Caltech struck first behind a hot-shooting opening half, connecting on seven three-pointers and building a lead that grew to as many as 13 points midway through the period. CLU stayed composed, however, sparked by
Jaden Young's shot-making as the Kingsmen steadily chipped away at the deficit.
A late fast-break finish by Young tied the game at 40-40 before the Beavers reclaimed a slim 43-40 advantage heading into the break.
The tone shifted quickly after halftime, as Cal Lutheran opened the period with renewed energy, taking its first lead just over four minutes in and never relinquishing it. The Kingsmen shot 57.5 percent in the second half, leaning on consistent paint touches to steadily create separation.
Young led the way with a team-high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including five three-pointers.
Ze'ev Remer was nearly flawless from the field, going 5-for-6 to add 10 points, while
Ryder Mjoen chipped in 12 off the bench.
Cal Lutheran's depth proved decisive as the game wore on. The Kingsmen scored 40 bench points and dominated the glass, outrebounding Caltech 43-26 while piling up 44 points in the paint.
Aidan Crawford provided a spark in limited minutes, scoring nine points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting in the second half, while
Camden Hyde added nine points, highlighted by a dunk that pushed the lead to 18 late.
The victory lifts the Kingsmen to 11-11 overall and 6-7 in SCIAC play as they return home to continue conference action Wednesday, February 11, at 7 p.m. against La Verne. Senior
