THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran baseball kept its bats blazing and its arms steady on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Caltech in a dominant SCIAC doubleheader at George "Sparky" Anderson Field.
The Kingsmen rolled to a 10-1 victory in game one before erupting for a 15-1 win in the nightcap to complete the three-game sweep of the Beavers. With the pair of wins, Cal Lu improves to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC play, boasting a ridiculous 103-32 run differential through nine games.
GAME ONE: CAL LUTHERAN 10, CALTECH 1
The Kingsmen wasted little time setting the tone, scoring in each of the first four innings to build a steady cushion.
Daniel Orozco drove in the game's first run with an RBI groundout in the opening frame, and
Philip Jeong followed with an RBI single in the second. After Caltech trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the third, Cal Lutheran answered immediately with a
Troy Anderson sacrifice fly to push the lead to 3-1.
Jona Dawson led the offensive charge, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs, including a run-scoring single in the fourth and an RBI double in the sixth. The Kingsmen broke the game open in the sixth with three runs, capitalizing on aggressive baserunning and timely contact to stretch the advantage to 7-1.
CLU then added three more in the eighth as
Brady Werther delivered an RBI single,
Kai Caranto was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Dawson capped the scoring with a sac fly.
Oscar Lopez was sharp in his start on the mound, earning the win after allowing just one run on three hits over five innings while striking out six.
Aidan Buntich,
Caleb Wilson, and
Matt Campo combined for four scoreless frames in relief, with Campo striking out the side in the ninth to secure the victory.
The Kingsmen swiped 14 bases in the opener and drew seven hit-by-pitches, applying constant pressure throughout.
GAME TWO: CAL LUTHERAN 15, CALTECH 1
Cal Lu struck for two runs in the first and three more in the second to jump out to a 5-0 lead in what quickly became an avalanche.
Anderson and
Ethan Dungo each drove in runs in the opening inning, while Caranto's two-run single and
Lucas Danielewicz's RBI knock highlighted the second.
The Kingsmen put the game out of reach with a five-run fifth inning, taking advantage of wild pitches and defensive miscues before Danielewicz lined a two-run single to make it 10-0.
They weren't finished, as five more runs crossed in the sixth.
Aidan Buntich roped a two-run double down the left-field line, and
Bostan Ujimori and
Gavin Farley added RBIs as the Purple & Gold emptied the bench and continued to produce, not missing a beat.
Justin Gottlieb earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.
Jake Porter and
Colten Hanson followed in relief, with Hanson striking out three in the seventh.
Danielewicz paced the offense in game two, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Caranto scored three times and added two hits.
Wes Lynch collected two hits, two runs, and an RBI, and
Landen Adair chipped in two hits and two runs scored.
In all, the Kingsmen tallied 25 runs on 22 hits across the twin bill, showcasing lineup depth and strong pitching performances in both contests.

Cal Lutheran now gets roughly a month-long break from SCIAC play. The Kingsmen return to action Saturday, February 28, when they host Bridgewater for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
