Regals Down Sagehens to Clinch Share of Regular Season Title

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's basketball (20-4,12-3 SCIAC) took down the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (15-9,10-5 SCIAC) 73-60 in Gilbert Arena on Wednesday night, clinching at least a share of their second SCIAC title in three years.

The title is the Regals' 10th since joining the SCIAC prior to the 1991-92 season. Should they win the season finale on Saturday, Cal Lutheran would clinch sole possession of the regular season.

The Regals were without their star, SCIAC Player-of-the-Year-hopeful Alline Ballard, for a third-straight game. In spite of the absence, the Regals delivered one of their best offensive performances of the season, scoring their most points in over a month on 43% (25-58) shooting from the field and 47% (14-30) from beyond the arc.

Following a commanding 27-10 first quarter that saw the Regals in complete control, the Sagehens were never able to pull the contest within more than nine as Cal Lu was off to the races, leading by double digits the entire second half.

Kaiya Mack led the way for the Regals, grabbing the first double-double of her career, notching 27 points on 70% (9-13) and 11 rebounds. Natalie Villamor, Sydney Heyn, and Janna Holley each delivered double-digit performances of their own, logging 12, 11, and 10 respectively.

Cal Lutheran will look to grab lone possession of the SCIAC title as it hosts Occidental for Senior Day at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21. Holley, Maddi Lee, and Deanna Broughton will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
