Holley’s Game Winner Propels Regals Over Redlands For Fifth Straight Win

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — A contested Janna Holley layup as time expired capped off a dramatic come-from-behind victory, giving Cal Lutheran (17-3, 9-2) a 68-66 win over Redlands (14-6, 7-5) on Saturday evening.

The layup put Holley, a senior, at 1,098 career points, placing her 10th all-time in Regals basketball history.

Cal Lutheran got out to an early lead in the first quarter, maintaining it for the remainder of the period, although the Bulldogs kept it tight.

The Regals couldn't miss to start the second quarter, going on an 11-3 run during which they didn't miss a shot, going 3-3 from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line to go up 26-15. Redlands responded in a big way however, closing out the half on a 16-5 run of its own to send the contest to halftime square at 31.

In a back-and-forth third quarter that saw four lead changes, Redlands eventually got the upper hand, leading for the final three minutes of the frame.

An and-one from Sydney Heyn evened the score at 51, although a 14-9 run put Redlands up five with just over a minute to go.

Holley swung a pass out to Heyn in the corner, right in front of the Regal bench, and she nailed it, cutting the deficit to two.

Later, Alline Ballard was fouled under the basket on a turn-around jump shot with 17 seconds remaining, sending her to the free-throw line with a chance to even the match at 66 apiece.

As a near-full home crowd looked on, Ballard knocked down both, causing the Purple & Gold faithful to erupt and Redlands to call a timeout.

Redlands took the ball down the court as the clock wound under 10 seconds, looking for a go-ahead, potentially game-winning basket. An errant pass out of bounds stifled the effort however, giving the Regals the ball on their side of the court with 6.7 seconds remaining.

The inbound went straight to Holley, who drove right to the basket and banked a layup over a pair of Bulldog defenders as time expired, giving Cal Lutheran the 68-66 victory and cementing herself in the Regals' record books.

Head Coach Kelli DiMuro said she "wanted to make sure that [Holley] got the ball" on the final possession, and that a pick and roll was executed by the rest of the team to clear a lane for her.

DiMuro said she saw a lot of "fight and determination" from the Regals throughout the game in the face of multiple lead changes. "[The team] stepped up tonight. I was very proud of them," DiMuro added.

Holley's 20 points marked a season high to go with Ballard notching 18 points and 14 rebounds, her SCIAC-leading 15th double-double this season. Kaiya Mack also contributed eight points, three rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal in the win.

The Regals will look to add to their winning streak on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. as they host the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas.
