Kingsmen Comeback Falls Short at Occidental

LOS ANGELES – The Cal Lutheran men's soccer team battled back from an early two-goal deficit to even the score, but Occidental pulled away late for a 4-2 SCIAC victory Wednesday night at W.C. Patterson Field.

The Kingsmen (4-7-3, 2-5-1 SCIAC) outshot the Tigers 21-9 and held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal, but Occidental capitalized on its opportunities to secure the win.

Occidental opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the eighth minute before adding another goal in the 19th minute to take a 2-0 lead. Cal Lutheran responded in the closing minutes of the first half, as Shaw Nishizawa scored his first goal of the season in the 43rd minute to cut the deficit to one heading into halftime.

The Kingsmen carried that momentum into the second half, continuing to pressure the Tigers offensively. Zach Mohr set up Dane Paulson for the equalizer in the 63rd minute, bringing Cal Lutheran all the way back to tie the match at 2-2.

However, Occidental regained the lead in the 78th minute before adding an insurance goal in the 89th minute to pull away late.

The Kingsmen return to William Rolland Stadium on Saturday, October 17, for Homecoming against Whittier at 1 p.m. Cal Lutheran defeated the Poets on the road just last week and will look to complete the season sweep while continuing its push for a spot in the SCIAC Tournament.
