CLAREMONT, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's basketball (12-3, 4-2 SCIAC) was defeated by CMS (13-2, 7-0 SCIAC) on the road on Wednesday night in a low-scoring affair, 59-48.
Alline Ballard and
Janna Holley both scored in double-digits, but it wasn't enough to outlast the Athenas.
The Regals got off to an incredibly cold start offensively, scoring just five points in the opening quarter. Cal Lutheran took a 2-0 lead after a pair of free throws from
Kaiya Mack, but it wouldn't hold another lead for the remainder of the game. CMS led 18-5 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was much better for the Regals, and a steal by
Janna Holley turned into a fastbreak layup for
Kaitlyn Brongiel about halfway through the period to cut the Athenas' advantage to 21-15. Ballard hit a couple of shots, and back-to-back layups from
Sydney Heyn and Holley in the final minute brought Cal Lutheran within two points, as it entered the break down 27-25.
Coming out of the half, Holley converted on a pair of free throws to tie the game at 27. CMS was able to outscore Cal Lutheran for the rest of the quarter, leading 40-34 with 10 minutes left to play.
A three-pointer from Holley and a jumper from
Anna Sherman in the first minute of the fourth quarter brought Cal Lutheran back within a point, but the Athenas went on a 10-2 run to extend its lead to nine points with four minutes left on the clock. CMS would go on to win 59-48.
Ballard dropped a team-high 12 points (4/4 FT), adding eight rebounds, three steals, and a block. This ended her double-double streak at 11 games, marking the first time she failed to achieve the feat since November 11 when she played 14 minutes in a blowout victory.
Holley scored 11 points, and Brongiel contributed on defense with 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Cal Lutheran will look to get back in the win column when they go on the road to face Occidental on Saturday at 4pm.
