TACOMA, Wash. – Cal Lutheran women's soccer (3-0-1, 0-0-0 SCIAC) gutted out a 2-1 victory over Puget Sound in the second and final match of its road trip up to Washington this weekend.
Tessa French scored early, and
Jessica Sprouse converted another goal late to give the Regals enough insurance to take down the Loggers on their home turf.
Cal Lutheran started off in control, with three early corner kicks and a shot attempt in the first 12 minutes. The constant pressure eventually led to a goal from French in the 12th minute off an assist by
Anna Evenson.
The Regals didn't let up, drawing another corner kick just a minute later and managed two more shots before the 20th minute, outpacing Puget Sound (1-2-1, 0-0-0 NWC) in that category 4 to 1 in the early going.
The Loggers eventually gained some momentum on offense and got a few shots off, but keeper
Kelsey Slaugh made two back-to-back saves right at the 28th minute mark. Slaugh later made her third save of the opening half in the 39th minute to send the Regals into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Cal Lutheran came out firing in the second half with four shots on goal by four different players–Sprouse,
Riley Cardenas, Evenson, and
Olivia Suarez–but each was saved by the Loggers' keeper.
Puget Sound didn't even manage its first shot of the half until the 85th minute thanks to the Regals' impeccable defense and control. Later in the 85th minute, Sprouse was able to capitalize on a fast break thanks to a great look from Suarez on the defensive half of the field.
With a 2-0 cushion late in the game, a last-minute goal from the feisty Loggers wasn't enough as Cal Lutheran took the match.
Stephenie Hackett led the Regals with three shot attempts, and Sprouse's goal was her second in as many games as she impressed all weekend on offense.
The Regals will return to California to take on Westmont in Santa Barbara next weekend on Saturday, September 13.
