Regals Suffer First Loss of Season at Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's soccer (3-1-1, 0-0-0 SCIAC) lost 1-0 on Saturday afternoon on the road at Division-II Westmont. The match was scoreless for the majority of its duration until the Warriors scored in the 85th minute, handing the Regals their first loss of 2025.

Although this counted as an exhibition for Westmont (0-3-0, 0-0-0 Big West), it came out firing with four shot attempts in the first 18 minutes, leading to two saves by Regals goalie Kelsey Slaugh.

Chloe Smith was able to send in the first shot for Cal Lutheran in the 19th minute, but it was stopped by the Warriors' keeper. Olivia Suarez ripped the Regals' second and final shot attempt of the opening half, as Westmont controlled the pace while outshooting Cal Lutheran 10-2. Slaugh added another save late in the half.

The second half was much more neutral, with Cal Lutheran and Westmont trading shots and possessions. Coming out of the half, Kira Kasarda relieved Slaugh in goal, and she made three saves in her first 35 minutes of game action.

In the 75th minute, Elena Baltazar sent a shot on goal that the Westmont keeper was able to defend.

The Warriors were able to end the combined scoring drought in the 85th minute as they netted the game-winning goal, leaving the Regals without enough time to answer.

29 Regals saw minutes in this one as Frank Marino wanted his roster to gain valuable experience in the final match of their non-conference schedule (excluding UC Santa Cruz in October).

Cal Lutheran will now look ahead to a huge test to kick off SCIAC play, as Pomona-Pitzer will visit Thousand Oaks on Wednesday night.
