TACOMA, Wash. – Cal Lutheran women's soccer (2-0-1, 0-0-0) controlled possession from start to finish and finally broke through in the late second half to earn a 1-0 victory over #23 Pacific Lutheran on Friday afternoon.
Cal Lutheran carried the run of play for much of the afternoon, applying steady pressure from the opening whistle. Several early looks tested the Lute defense, but PLU goalkeeper Abby Winkler kept the game scoreless with key stops in the first half.
Cal Lutheran's persistence paid off in the 83rd minute when
Riley Cardenas slipped a pass into space and
Jessica Sprouse calmly finished into the bottom right corner. The goal gave the Regals a deserved lead after controlling tempo and possession for the majority of the match.
CLU's defense, meanwhile, turned in a complete performance, holding the Lutes without a shot on goal. Late pushes from Pacific Lutheran (0-1-2, 0-0-0) were quickly turned away, and the Regals closed out the match to secure their second win of the season.
The Regals finished with a 21-3 edge in shots and 11 on goal, but Winkler's 10 saves kept the match tight until Sprouse's decisive strike.
Cal Lutheran turns its attention to Puget Sound on Sunday, looking to keep the momentum rolling on the road.
