TACOMA, Wash. – Cal Lutheran football (2-0, 0-0) made a statement in Tacoma, dominating Puget Sound (0-3, 0-0) 55-28 in the team's road opener on Saturday.
The win marks the Kingsmen's first time winning back-to-back games since 2023 and their first time starting a season 2-0 since 2021.
The game was won in the baskets of the Kingsmen running back room, as
JD Sumlin rushed 32 times for 195 yards and 4 touchdowns, tied for the second most rushing touchdowns by a Kingsmen player in a game since 2001, and
Mehki Delouth rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries
Cal Lutheran scored eight touchdowns on nine drives, their only punt coming with just over a minute left of game time in the fourth quarter.
The Loggers struck first on their opening drive, but Cal Lutheran would put up 21 unanswered to take a two touchdown lead. Puget Sound scored a touchdown to cut it to a one score game, initiating a trade-off of jabs that would end with a Cal Lutheran score with less than a minute left in the half to go up 35-21 going into halftime.
A pair of touchdowns in the third quarter put Cal Lutheran up by 28, and off-setting touchdowns in the fourth helped the Kingsmen coast to a 55-28 victory.
The Kingsmen are back in action next Saturday night, September 27, as they travel to Redlands in their SCIAC opener.
