Regals Volleyball Sweeps In Home Opener

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's volleyball (5-1, 0-0) grabbed a win in its home opener, sweeping Covenant College 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 27-25) on Friday evening.

The Regals came out firing, and after a 1-1 tie to start the contest, not trailing the rest of the set. Cal Lutheran jumped out to a commanding 15-8 lead and were able to use that to coast to an easy 25-16 first set victory.

The second set proved to be much more of a grind for the Regals as they found themselves trailing 12-9 about halfway through the set and tied at 18 apiece near the set's conclusion. A pair of Cal Lutheran points would send the Scots (3-5, 0-0) into a timeout down two, but the break didn't work as Cal Lutheran went on a 5-3 run to take the second set as well.

The Regals seemed to have all the momentum in the world heading into the third set, but Covenant didn't go down easy, as they led the Regals 20-16 late in the set. However, a blink of an eye and four unanswered points, including three from sophomore Kaylee Clayton, later, the Regals tied it up at 20.

In a back and forth next dozen points that saw each team have a set point, a pair of attack errors by the Scots sealed the game and the sweep for the Regals.

Clayton and fellow sophomore Kennedy Smith led the way with 13 kills each. This is nothing new for the current roommates, as they are first and second on the team this season in the category.

Clayton mentioned the team's size, calling them "smaller" and that it makes them fight that much harder.

"I think this team is relentless. We've just been swinging at every single ball, no matter what. And I think that's been working for us," Clayton said.

Both Clayton and Smith credited the coaching staff and upperclassmen for helping make their transition to the collegiate level seamless and helping them produce at such a high level immediately in their careers.

The win is the fifth straight for the Regals, their third sweep and just their third set surrendered in that span.

Clayton, Smith, and the Regals are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, September 13 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. against Linfield and UC Santa Cruz respectively as they wrap up the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational.
