SALEM, Va. – Cal Lutheran men's volleyball saw its 2025 season come to an end on Friday night as the Kingsmen fell to No. 4 Springfield College in the semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament. The set scores of the match were 19-25, 16-25, 17-25.
Michael Stahl led in the loss with nine kills, followed by
Jordan Cooper's six.
Ben Weber had five kills and recorded the team's lone service ace.
Parker Brown and
Borys Horiuk combined for nine kills and two blocks in the middle, and
Braden Gonzales led the defense with eight digs.
It was a tough evening for the Kingsmen as Springfield out-hit them .438 percent to .161. The Pride also held a 8-1 advantage in aces and out-blocked Cal Lutheran 7-3.
The Kingsmen got out to an early lead to start the first set, but Springfield's six-point streak allowed the Pride to go up by four. Cal Lu worked to get back within two, down just 18-20, but a 5-1 run for Springfield would earn them the set.
The Pride carried its momentum into the second, jumping out to a quick 8-1 advantage. The Kingsmen were given the next two points on a pair of Springfield errors before the Pride responded with two more kills. A kill from Cooper and a block by Horiuk cut Cal Lutheran's deficit to 5-10, but the Pride's substantial lead proved to be unrecoverable.
With four successful reverse sweeps under their belt this season, not all hope was lost for the Kingsmen going into the third. Springfield scored the first three points, but kills from Cooper, Horiuk, Weber, and
Gavin Galanski evened the set eight.
Stahl kept it within one twice with a pair of kills, but again, the Pride would take a comfortable lead. Down 12-17,
Keaton Hendry subbed in and immediately contributed a kill of his own before Springfield claimed seven of the next nine points, interrupted by two kills from Brown.
The final Kingsmen points of the year came from a Stahl kill and a Horiuk solo block, then the Pride sealed the match with a kill, ending Cal Lutheran's campaign.
The Purple & Gold finished the year at 23-7 overall, and has made its second-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament after winning the National Championship last season.
The graduating class of Stahl, Cooper, Weber, Horiuk, and Brown have etched their names into Cal Lu history, leading the program to its first championship win, earning multiple All-American and All-Region honors, and sitting atop of numerous stat categories.
