CLAREMONT, Calif. – Cal Lutheran softball traveled to face Pomona-Pitzer on Friday afternoon, falling to the Sagehens in the final inning 2-3.
It was a pitching dual through and through as the teams stayed scoreless until the fifth inning. The Regals struck first with an RBI single off the bat of
Nadia Collins that scored
Abby Strong.
Pomona responded in the bottom of the sixth with a base hit, a walk, and a fly out that got runners on second and third. A two-run knock would clear the bases and give the Sagehens the lead.
A single from
Brooke DeSmet got things going for Cal Lutheran in the seventh, sending
Olivia Vargas to the plate. The senior roped an RBI double to center field to bring DeSmet home, tying the game and marking the 100th hit of her Regal career.
All knotted up at two, Pomona standout Devin Waddell would lead off the bottom of the frame and launch her Division III-leading 13th homerun of the season to walk it off.
Ashlyn Flinchum (6-3) threw the full game for the Regals, striking out five and walking three. Vargas, Collins, and
Danielle Diaz recorded two hits each.
