THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's volleyball tied its season-high in service aces with 10 on Thursday night as the Kingsmen swept NAIA opponent Simpson University, 25-18, 25-17, 25-14.
Cal Lu hit .363 on the night while holding the Red Hawks to just .130 percent, swinging nearly double the amount of kills to enjoy a 40-23 advantage. The Kingsmen also out-performed Simpson at the service line 10-3.
Jordan Cooper and
Michael Stahl led the offense with 10 kills apiece, followed by
Ben Weber who had six kills and four aces. On defense,
Braden Gonzales posted a team-high 12 digs to crown himself the new single-season record holder with 258 total.
The teams kept it close in set one before Cal Lutheran went on a nine-point rampage. Down 16-18, the Kingsmen would benefit from five Red Hawk errors, three kills from Cooper and Stahl, and a block by Stahl and
Parker Brown for the win.
Cal Lu took a three-point lead in the second set with kills from Weber and Cooper and an ace from
Borys Horiuk.
Matthew Wilcox later added a kill and an ace of his own to put the Kingsmen up 13-9. Cal Lutheran rallied for another point streak featuring back-to-back aces from Weber, and Cooper would close it out with his seventh kill of the match.
Simpson got out to a 10-8 lead in set three, but the Kingsmen were unstoppable with 12-2 run to completely turn things around. Cooper and
Connor Crawford each had two kills while Weber and Wilcox combined for three kills, two aces, and a block. The remainder of the set was all Crawford as he ended the match with four-straight service aces.
Cal Lutheran now sits at 20-6 on the year with just one official contest left in regular season play. They will celebrate Senior Night on Saturday, April 5 with an exhibition against Moorpark College, before taking on No. 15 UC Santa Cruz on April 12.
