Cal Lutheran softball completed its first SCIAC series sweep of 2025, defeating Occidental College 7-4 in Eagle Rock on Friday afternoon, and run-ruling the Tigers in both games of the Saturday doubleheader at home.
GAME ONE: CAL LUTHERAN 7, OCCIDENTAL 4
The Regals jumped on Oxy early with a trio of base hits and a hit by pitch in the top of the first inning. Dani Diaz later sent a sac fly into left field to put Cal Lutheran up 2-0 in the third.
The Tigers responded with three runs on three hits to take the lead in the bottom of the frame, but the Regals rallied for three more runs of their own in the top of the fourth off a bases-loaded sac fly from
Brooke DeSmet and an Oxy fielding error.
DeSmet added two more RBIÂ to give Cal Lutheran some insurance in the fifth, and
Ashlyn Flinchum (3-1) would allow only four more hits and one run for the Regals to take the series opener.
Flinchum got the win in the circle, throwing her third complete game of the season with nine hits, three walks, and five strikeouts. DeSmet led at the plate going 3-3 with three RBI and two runs, while
Jessica Waters went 2-3 with an RBI single and a double.
GAME TWO: CAL LUTHERAN 9, OCCIDENTAL 1 (6 INN.)
Back at home, the Regals gave up just one run in the top of the first before silencing the Tigers for their first mercy-rule victory of the day.
Olivia Vargas got Cal Lutheran rolling with a two-run single in the bottom of the third, and
Mia Antonino tacked on another with a base hit down the right field line in the fourth.
The Regals busted the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking advantage of five walks and two hits to score five and take the game 9-1.
Starting on the mound for Cal Lu was
Ally Forbell (3-1), who allowed eight hits while striking out three and walking two through 5.0 innings.
Kalli Strahm threw the final frame with one hit and a strikeout.Â
It was a full team effort in the batter's box as
Nadia Collins went 3-3 and scored twice. Vargas was 1-3 with three RBI and a walk while
Brooke Strahm and
Hanna Booth added two more RBI apiece. Booth, Waters, and
Reyna Perez all drew two walks each.
GAME THREE: CAL LUTHERAN 11, OCCIDENTAL 3 (6 INN.)
The Regals exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth after being down 1-3 through the first five and a half innings of play.
It all started with an RBI base hit from DeSmet which brought home Antonino. Collins then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, followed by a sac fly from Diaz, a double from Waters, and a pair of singles from Booth and Antonino to make it 7-3 Cal Lutheran.Â
A two-run single from DeSmet and three more bases-loaded walks would end the game and the series in favor of the Regals.
Ava Tepesano,
Mia Cortez, and K. Strahm (1-0) all saw time in the circle for Cal Lu. Five different Regals all had a multi-hit game and DeSmet led again with three RBI.
